About Creature from the Black Lagoon

Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954) introduced the Gill-man, the last of Universal's classic monsters and the only one conceived entirely in-house rather than adapted from literature. The film was shot in 3-D and features revolutionary underwater photography that remains beautiful today, with sequences filmed in Florida's Wakulla Springs standing in for the Amazon. Two performers played the Creature: Ben Chapman on land and Olympic swimmer Ricou Browning underwater, with Browning holding his breath for up to four minutes during filming. The famous scene of the Creature swimming beneath the unsuspecting Kay, mirroring her movements, has been analyzed as everything from romantic ballet to predatory stalking, exemplifying the monster's complex appeal.
