About Creature from the Black Lagoon
Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954) introduced the Gill-man, the last of Universal's classic monsters and the only one conceived entirely in-house rather than adapted from literature. The film was shot in 3-D and features revolutionary underwater photography that remains beautiful today, with sequences filmed in Florida's Wakulla Springs standing in for the Amazon. Two performers played the Creature: Ben Chapman on land and Olympic swimmer Ricou Browning underwater, with Browning holding his breath for up to four minutes during filming.
